The Changing Face of Banner
by Julie Adcox

On November 13, 2001, Banner donned a fresh face while also accommodating software upgrades and staying current with Financial Aid regulatory changes. Information and Educational Technology (IET) performed this upgrade in collaboration with the Registrar's Office in order to make life simpler for Banner users by improving its use and functionality. Users will also notice cosmetic changes, such as better use of color on the screen. The changes most affecting users are modifications to user login procedures and UC Davis forms, as well as a Citrix environment upgrade. "This was not just an upgrade to Banner," explains Ann Leamon, a member of the IET team that configured the upgrade. "We also upgraded the machinery as well as Oracle, the database that Banner sits on."

Logging In
Modified login procedures increase the speed with which users access Banner. The old three-step process of logging in has been shortened to two steps, eliminating the need for a Citrix password.

Missing Icons and Updated Terminology
Icons formerly found at the bottom of UCD forms have been eliminated in Banner 5. Toolbar icons have replaced the icons previously found at the bottom of the forms. Despite these changes, keyboard commands remain the same. Some icons have been replaced with folders that appear in the left pane of the screen, while the right pane displays folder contents.

Smooth Transitions
Leamon, who oversees the Banner Help Desk, says that the successful transition ushered in a few busy weeks for the help desk. If you have not yet started using the new version of Banner, the University Registrar recommends that you replace Citrix with the most current version and test your Kerberos password. To test your Kerberos password, visit UC Davis Computing Account Services, click on "Test your password," then follow the simple instructions.

Help is Available
Other resources are available to ease the transition: for information or assistance upgrading Citrix, contact your computer resource person or visit IET Desktop Support's Banner page.
