New Manager of Network Operations: Amy Slavich
by Bethany Faith Daniels

Network Operations welcomes new manager Amy Slavich. In taking this position, Slavich joins a campus service group that we all rely on every day.

The Network Operations Center (NOC) has 20 employees who support voice services (telephones, voice mail, calling features), data services (campus network, wireless network services), the 800 MHz radio system, cable services for the residence halls, remote access modems, connectivity to the Internet, and a campus help desk.

In her first couple of months, Amy plans to focus primarily on data services. "The Internet is now like the telephone; the campus community just expects it to be on and operational," comments Amy. "The network has become such an integral part of how we conduct business, how we teach, and even how we communicate." The importance of being connected does not escape Slavich. She knows that keeping the network operational requires just the right combination of planning and vigilance. The NOC recently installed a generator to back up the campus network. "We continue to build up resiliency in our backbone network," Slavich states, "by ensuring we have adequate resources supporting our network equipment."

Amy Slavich's first few weeks as the manager of Network Operations have been full. "I've jumped right in to assist with moving the campus to future technologies and network growth," Amy says. "Analysis is the key to ensure we don't adopt a new network technology before proving there is a need for it, that it is the appropriate technology, and that it can support the UC Davis campus mission." Amy brings a strong drive to be "hands-on" in her goal to "guide the network's future through the talented staff at the NOC."

Impassioned by design, Amy Slavich has always embraced data networking as a challenging adventure. She draws inspiration from something Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "You must do the thing you think you cannot do." Midway through college, Amy made a change from Veterinary Medicine to Network Engineering. "And I have been learning ever since," Slavich smiles. "You can't stand still: you get run over."

Amy Slavich enjoys the UC Davis environment. "I worked in the private sector for so long — over a decade. Education creates a new challenge to me that I can make a big contribution to." Amy elaborates, "an exciting part of being on campus is the new technology and the size of the network: it's a small city, a true Campus Area Network that I look forward to serving."
