Orienting Faculty to Classroom Media Equipment
Meet and Greet Program Continues
by Robert Ralston

During summer and into fall, 40 classrooms-located in Art, Chemistry, Everson, Haring, Kleiber, Olson, Roessler, Social Science and Humanities, Veihmeyer, and Young-were upgraded with new paint, carpeting, seats, and media equipment, as part of the Registrar's Classroom Upgrade Project.

Information and Educational Technology (IET) coordinated the installation and testing of the media equipment, including state-of-the-art LCD projectors (for projecting video images from a laptop, VCR or other device), Smart Panels (that make it easy to toggle between a laptop, VCR and the projectors) as well as microphones, speakers, VCRs, and network access ports. Some rooms were also equipped with cassette players, and all devices were placed in a media cabinet (http://av.ucdavis.edu/media-cabinet/).

For the last three quarters, IET has implemented a Meet and Greet program to train faculty on the new equipment.

Meet and Greet Has Two Goals
  1. Provide in-class support on the first day of class. IET places staff from its Classroom Support Unit in some equipped classrooms at the beginning of the first class to help, if necessary, with audio-visual equipment questions. At the beginning of this quarter, six of the larger general assignment classrooms and 77 different courses were staffed from March 30 through April 3.

Staff also offered instructors the UCD Faculty Technology Guide and basic instructions for using the classroom equipment.

  2. Provide outside training sessions. IET also offers training sessions prior to and during the first week of classes. These sessions teach instructors how to get a laptop hooked up to the room projector and to make an active Internet connection that can be fed through the projector.

Help Is Still Available
If you did not have the opportunity to get a Meet and Greet orientation or attend a training session, you may schedule a personal training session at The Arbor in 161 Everson, by calling 7524-2115. Be sure to bring your laptop with you to the training.

Information is also available online: For general questions about the meet and greet program and/or the classroom media equipment, please feel free to contact Robert Ralston at rlralston@ucdavis.edu or 752-5139.
