Campus Operators Getting in Touch with Technology
by Bethany Faith Daniels

The UC Davis telephone operators are using a new campus directory system. On February 6th, Information and Educational Technology's Communications Resources removed the existing directory VAX server and installed Amcom Software's directory package. The conversion went smoothly and the results have been great. In the words of one campus operator Rhonda Molina, "I am very impressed with Amcom. The system makes the operator function much easier and faster."

The Amcom directory software is full of features that will potentially make it easier for all of us to use the phone system on campus. For instance, operators now have an easier time looking up individuals within departments when presented with incomplete information, such as a partial or incorrect name.

Another improvement is the integration of computer telephony. Calls are now answered through the computer and all operator keyboards are configured with telephone keys like "transfer" and "hold." What this means for the caller is faster connections. Now when a caller dials "752-1011" (the campus operator number) the operator can connect to the campus number by highlighting and clicking with a mouse, rather than making the connection manually.

Planned future features include a voice recognition system for incoming calls and Web-based directory listing update forms.
