Class Mailing Lists
Easier, faster and smarter
by Debbie Edwards

On December 20, Automated Class Mailing Lists (ACMLs) will be renamed "Class Mailing Lists" (CMLs) and will offer new features for quicker turn around and easier setup. Class Mailing Lists are lists created by instructors or their representatives (such as Teaching Assistants or departmental managers) upon request. Each list enables the instructor to send email messages to students enrolled in his or her class. First offered in fall 1996, these lists are now widely used by a large number of instructors. (This quarter alone, more than 500 lists are in use.) By incorporating feedback from faculty, we've made the following improvements to the mailing lists.

We've made it...

  • Easier: List owners can use the class mailing list Web site to determine who can post to the list, manually add non-Banner subscribers, set mailing list options (such as hiding or moderating the list), change the list's password, and edit owners of the list.

  • Faster: Lists can now be created directly from the Web site by the end of the next business day, rather than the few days it used to take. List owners will be able to make changes on the Web management page and will not have to email their requests to the postmaster and wait for the changes to be made.

  • Smarter: List owners can now choose to have a secured Web archive created when they request the list. Since it is password-protected, only UC Davis affiliates can read the email messages archived on the Web. Also, while in the past subscribers were unable to see if their email was posted to the listserv, they now will receive copies of their postings.

How can I request a Class Mailing List?
Instructors (or their representatives) can request a Class Mailing List by going through the Web-based request page linked off http://email.ucdavis.edu/. In order to move to the request page, requesters must authenticate with their UCD LoginID and Kerberos password. On this page, instructors will be able to customize their mailing lists to better complement their classes. For instance, options will include naming the class list and whether a Web archive gateway or link is necessary.

If there is a problem with the list the Postmaster will contact the requester for additional information. Barring any unforeseen problems, Class Mailing Lists will be created by the end of the next business day.

Class Mailing List owners will now be able to manage their class lists via the Web at http://listproc.ucdavis.edu/listproc/manage.html.
