Milestones in Advanced Technology Projects
by Autumn Bouck

Several Advanced Technology Project Teams, formed by the Vice Provost for Information and Educational Technology, have been investigating infrastructure and middleware critical to the campus. Some of these teams have recently released reports and draft policies. Here are some of the highlights:

Firewalls and Network Security
This project team was created to review security issues and research firewalls as a security mechanism. The team completed a draft report with the following recommendations:
  • The decision to erect departmental firewalls should remain with managers and directors.
  • A central firewall is necessary for credit/debit transactions per the requirements of credit card authorization organizations.
  • The campus should explore other security solutions and create a strategic plan for security.

The draft report was open to comments until September 21. Bob Ono, Campus Security Coordinator, is compiling these edits and revising the report as necessary.

Electronic Credit/Debit Card Transactions
This project was completed and the final report was sent to Vice Chancellor of Administration, Janet Hamilton. The report found that IET can help the Office of Administration support secure, available, accurate and cost-efficient authorization, as well as a settlement and recording system for Internet credit card transactions. The project outlines several ways to update the current credit/debit policy to meet the demands of authorization companies and proposed e-commerce security standards. For more details see "Charge It" Via the Internet (May/June IT Times).

Incident Response
This project was initiated to create a campuswide program structure for responding to computer security incidents. Completion of the project was marked by the publication of the framework and the creation of the Incident Response Team. This team will work to limit the misuse or abuse of UC Davis computer or network resources and prevent the loss of or damage to electronic information resources. IET is creating operational protocols for the Incident Response Team.

Wireless Policy Development
A draft of the wireless network policy was completed this summer for administrative and academic forums to review. The policy stipulates:
  • IET is responsible for the general wireless access points on campus, such as those in Shields Library and the Memorial Union.
  • IET must approve all campus access points.
  • IET will help departments within a building coordinate their wireless networking efforts.

The draft policy is available for download on the Vice Provost's site. Once the draft policy is revised, it will be submitted for campus adoption.
