What is a ServiceID?

It may be a surprise to you, but each computer account is "subscribed" to several ServiceIDs. Basically, ServiceIDs provide the accounts to which they are assigned the permission to access a variety of computing services. For instance, if you have a UC Davis computing account and check your email from work, access one of the campus modem pools from home, or login to one of the computers in the computer rooms, your account has been granted ServiceIDs for those services.

In fact, all accounts come with a default set of ServiceIDs. This quarter, all new accounts will come with ServiceIDs to access email, computer rooms, modem pools, and Kerberos security authentication. Some ServiceIDs, such as the ISUN ServiceID, can be added if you need access to more services.

For a more detailed definition of ServiceIDs, a description of each ServiceID, and a list of ServiceIDs currently assigned to your account, go to http://mothra.ucdavis.edu/ServiceID/.
