Mediaworks goes National Helping the Autism Summer Institute

Many students and faculty who have experienced Mediaworks' video productions firsthand recognize the innovation and efficacy the Mediaworks production team brings to instruction in the classroom. But this summer, people all over the country joined the broadening clientele of Mediaworks.

At California State University, Sacramento on August 8 and 9, the UC Davis MIND Institute (Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders) presented its inaugural Autism Summer Institute for area professionals to address theoretical, research, educational, and treatment issues for children with autism spectrum disorders.

If You Can't Bring the World to the Conference...
The MIND Institute, recognizing the potential impact of this unique forum, wanted to reach as many educators and researchers as possible so they asked Mediaworks to help them videoconference the event. Mediaworks' Paul VerWey directed the live production and the eight other crew members, providing the audio/video feed of the presentations and break out sessions, which the CSUS Media Services Team then distributed via Internet, C4Net, and ISDN. Mediaworks utilized all of the six possible camera sources (including computers and slide projectors), for an event which Mediaworks' student crew member Travis Alderman describes as "technically complex."

300 people attended the event, with approximately 700 additional people at 12 sites across the country participating via video conferencing.

"It was a very good partnership" Paul VerWey remarks on the collaboration with CSUS Media Services.

Barbara David, coordinator for the Autism Summer Institute agrees: "It was an amazing feat. Paul and his team were great to work with since they had flawless ideas about technical effects and helpful directions for the speakers."

The networking capabilities provided by Mediaworks helped the MIND Institute in its ongoing goal to raise awareness about neurodevelopmental research. The MIND Institute plans to sell the Mediaworks-edited version of the video, which is also being sought by UCTV in San Diego for airing.

...Mediaworks Can Bring the Conference to the World
The rest of the planet will soon get a chance to check out Mediaworks' productions as well. "Next year, we will work with Mediaworks to manage an international conference. Taiwan and Uruguay are already interested," says David.
