Established in November 1994, Sc[i]3 is a partnership between the US Patent and Trademark Office [PTO] and the City of Sunnyvale to extend comprehensive accessibility to the PTO's resources beyond the Washington, D.C. area to inventors, researchers, and corporations in the Silicon Valley, the Western United States, and the Pacific Rim. Sc[i]3 provides up-to-date and complete online access to patent and trademark information, both domestic and international, and allows patent applicants to search patent databases. Membership information, a fee schedule, frequently asked questions, and other information may be found on the Web site.

Grants for Technology Training and Leadership

The National Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE) is accepting applications for Leadership Grants to underwrite professional development opportunities for educators and staff.

The grants may be used to help educators study subject matter, new instructional approaches, and skills that enhance the effective operation of their institutions. Such skills include the use of information technologies as well as means for reaching out to parents, business, and community resources. Leadership Grants do not generally support major technology purchases.

Higher education faculty and staff are eligible to apply for an estimated 50 grants of up to $1,000 each. Application deadlines are APRIL 15, 1998 and OCTOBER 15, 1998.

Applicants who wish to use a Leadership Grant to participate in a summer professional development activity should submit an application in the previous fall.
