Network 21 Update

Anixter/Bay Networking Team has been selected to participate in the Network 21 Confidence Test that will measure the proposed ATM network's performance in a real world networking environment. The test involves monitoring live traffic generated by five campus departments: Advanced Network and Scientific Applications (ANSA), Distributed Computing Analysis and Support (DCAS), two units in Information Resources, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. This test of Anixter's router equipment will last through April 24.

Actual cutover of departments and buildings to the ATM network is scheduled to begin in June and will last for six months.

The planning for the actual cutover dates for individual departments and buildings will be determined from survey information being gathered from each department. The information includes a review and confirmation of the Network Access Modules (NAMs) scheduled for cutover to the ATM network, and development of Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) for each department. The VLAN system will allow departments that are dispersed at two or more locations to connect all their users to one departmental network. This overcomes the constraint that is associated with Local Area Networks (LANs), which can only group together users who are located in the same geographical vicinity, such as a small building or one section of a building.

The completed Network 21 project will consist of a high-speed ATM network linked to 171 buildings on the core campus.
