BITS & BYTES
Two guides to IT services, the Faculty Services Guide and the Student Computing Guide, have been updated on the Web. Both guides are designed to provide specific information about IT and technology resources relevant to student and faculty needs. The Student Computing Guide can be found at http://it.ucdavis.edu/pubs/SCG/. The Faculty Services Guide is available at http://it.ucdavis.edu/fsg/. Comments and suggestions for either publication may be sent to ietpubs@ucdavis.edu.
A report entitled "Detailed Year 2000 Compliance Status Report" was released on January 29. The report examines the Y2K status of all major campus administrative and infrastructure computing systems. The good news is, the campus is making good progress toward identifying and resolving all possible sources of Year 2000 vulnerability. However, given the multitude of computing systems and electronic equipment in use on our campus, we can expect some problems with the Year 2000 transition. These problems are not expected to endanger mission-critical systems. To view the report, visit the UC Davis Year 2000 Web site at http://y2k.ucdavis.edu/ or go directly to http://y2k.ucdavis.edu/y2k/y2kreport199.htm
The following software was recently added to the UC Davis site license collection:
- Transarc AFS Client software: a distributed filesystem that enables co-operating hosts (clients and servers) to efficiently share filesystem resources across local area and wide area networks.
- PC-Rdist: used to distribute files, update the registry, and maintain Windows settings on multiple computers across a network.
- Secure CRT: a secure telnet package for the Windows platform.
For more information on site licensing, visit the UC Davis site license Web site at http://slc.ucdavis.edu.
This year's campus phone directory cover won the Gold Award at the Sacramento Club of Printing House Craftsmen's Award Ceremony in February. Todd Zerger, a senior artist with Repro Graphics, directed and executed the project commissioned by Pat Elkins, supervisor of Directory Services in Communications Resources. The cover won the Design category for publications under 12" x 18". Todd used Abobe PhotoShop for image editing and composition, and Adobe PageMaker for page layout and "anything involving text."
